In Blizzard's upcoming Diablo 3 there is a crucial mechanic that revolves nearby the idea of putting magical gems into your gear. The gems offer improvements to the stats of the gear, they can give you more life, more stats, more attack power and even growth your chance to find magical items or gold.
Gems aren't new to Diablo 3, they were in World of Warcraft as well. There were 6 types, each cut into nearby a dozen distinct versions each that all have distinct effects depending on their cut. In Diablo 3, however, each of 4 gem types will have a distinct result on your gear based on the color of the gem and which gear it is located in. If it's put in your helm it will have one stat but if it's located in any other piece of gear it will have another.

Gem Types & Qualities
Like I mentioned, there are 4 types of gems: Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby and Topaz. Each has their own unique stats and each comes in 14 distinct levels of quality. These levels of potential are labeled with a prefix like: 'chipped ruby' or 'flawed ruby.' They go like this: chipped, flawed, regular, flawless, perfect, radiant, square, flawless square, exquisite square, radiant square, star, flawless star, exquisite star, radiant star. They are also referred to as L1 through L14.
Obviously, the higher the potential of the gem the more it improves your stats. The trick though, is that you will only find up to level 5 in the world killing monsters and bosses. The rest of the gems must be combined from 3 of the former potential to create 1 of the higher quality.
For example, you might have 3 chipped gems and be able to merge them into 1 flawed gem. This process will cost 50 gold and is repeated all the way from L1->L2 too L13->L14. The question is, the amount of chipped gems needed to create a higher potential gem increases exponentially as you go up the scale. A singular L14 gem will need 1.6 million L1 gems and cost nearly 40 million gold to combine.
The implications of this are that the high potential gems will be very exclusive and rare. Only the most dedicated (or rich) players will be able to buy other player's time and get these gems for themselves. The gigantic cost and time requirement for these gems is staggering.
